Origins of the Mersey Mission to Seamen

The Mersey Mission to Seamen was set up at a meeting on 22 November 1865. Its first committee meeting took place two days later on 24 November 1865. The Mission’s aim was to give spiritual guidance and more practical help to seafarers. W.H.G. Kingston of the Missions to Seamen which had recently been set up in London, was active in establishing the Mersey Mission to Seamen. To begin with the Mersey Mission to Seamen was a branch of the London organisation. From 1873 it became independent and used the name Mersey Mission to Seamen to show this.
