Sports and Games

By the 1920's games or "physical training" were part of school life. This must have presented some problems for schools, such as the Brunswick Wesleyan, which had a yard rather than a grass playing field. There were some playing fields and in the summer children were taken to local parks. Free transport was provided.

Games such as football and rounders could be played on any open space. To judge by its number of trophies the Granby Street School Football Team was particularly successful.

In the 1930's Harrington County Primary School held an annual sports day and the school closed for the day.

Children and parents went to the event, which in 1934, was held at Jericho Farm, Otterspool.

It was fortunate that the weather that year was fine as a lengthy programme of events was held.

Swimming was also popular. Schools did not have their own swimming pools, but local public baths were used. The pupils of Garston Church of England School and Banks Road School started regular and successful swimming classes when the local baths opened in 1907.
